Low slung pants

Low slung pants

Ok, let's try this again. Don't you hate when you type up a supreme blog entry and ya f*ck it up somehow? I had mine already to go and decided to be a complete dumbA** and add a pic. I'm sure you can figure out the rest....

(Happy, happy, joy, joy... breathe. breathe. breathe.)

Ok.

I was surfing the "blog world" today when I came across a reference to low-slung pants legislation at Jewdez' blog.

I found this story at kplctv.com

[image]JennsAbsent_720563 348.jpg[/image]

April 23, 2004
Reported by KPLC Staff

When it comes to teens and pants, how low can they go?

The issue is hot topic in the Louisiana legislature and one state lawmaker wants to outlaw low riding pants.

Made popular by rap musicians and hip hop culture more and more Louisiana teens, like those elsewhere often wear sagging pants.

But State Representative Derrick Sheppard wants lawmakers to ban people from wearing pants below the waist that reveal skin or underwear.

Sheppard insists its an effort to save the fabric of society and foster self-respect not police fashion: "It's time in our community in which we graduate from a level where you do whatever you want to do and it's all right with me to 'we shall be your brothers keeper'. And it's time not only to get our economic and political house in order but also our moral house in order."

The ACLU says the bill goes too far.

If approved, the penalty for low sung pants $500 and up to six months in jail.

My very first gut reaction was "WHAT THE FUCK!"

But then I started to think about it; I thought about my daughter, the clothes she wears, my parenting rights and the government.

I'm a pretty strict Mom. I don't let Ally wear whatever she wants. I figure it's my job as her PARENT to monitor what pants she wears. I want my daughter to look like an 8 year old, not a sixteen year old diva on TV. I don't want her to feel that she needs to wear Gap to be popular. I want her to be proud of herself, despite the clothes that she has own. It's my JOB as her parent to make sure that she learns right from wrong, how to dress successfully and what clothes are appropriate. NOT the governments. I'm very insulted by state represative Derrick Sheppard's assumptions that I can't parent my own children. Who is he to assume the role of the morality police?

It makes me so seething mad to think of this bill becoming legislation. What will they regulate next?

Her curfew?
Who she dates?
What kind of car I buy her when she turns 18?

These are all high-morality issues, will they try and control those as well?

Do the right thing. Vote for the representatives that will have your best interests at heart.

Rant over.

Leave a comment. Remember, be nice.

I posted that story last week and though I hate low slung pants I think that the legislature could work on more important things.

If parents were doing their job and not trying to be their children's "pal" instead of their parent, this wouldn't be much of an issue. Government should not take over the role of parenting.

Now, on the otherhand, just because they make low-slung pants in size 28, doesn't mean you should wear them either. LOL

It just doesn't make sense...there's always going to be someone out there that thinks they no best, and everyone should listen to them....kind of sound like my brother huh?

I'm interested in hearing the rest Kate. Which things would it work on?

I guess as a parent I just can't imagine someone telling me how to raise me child.

I read about this story a while back and I posted it on my "serious" blog. I agree with you, about who's job is it to parent my child.

I dont know about where you live, but in my area, they already regulate the curfew for kids of school age. But your right, they need to but out.

I totally agree on the "Pal" theory Scuba. My cousin (who sadly is now gone) was a big pal to her daughter. I realize a lot of it had to do with the fact that she was sick and wanted every moment to be good for her daughter, but in a way she ruined her. At the young age of 12 Brittany looked more like a 17 year old. She dated (IMO) way to early as well.

Sorry. This must be a touchy subject for me!

I don't think we have a curfew here in town. But, I know many other cities in Texas do.

Ahhh, the power of the mama grizzly bear!

As a parent of a 9 year old boy, I am of the same opinion - I can parent my child fine, thank you, I don't need your help. Unfortunately, I think there are a lot of parents out there that are disconnected from their children, or just downright confused about age appropriate dress. I'm amazed at how some of the girls in his 4th grade class dress sometimes!

Thank goodness he is a boy and could care less how he looks right now. He'd wear the same clothes every day if I let him (although he changes right away if he spills something on himself - good boy).

Now, if they really want to legislate something useful, how about advertising to children?!!!

Blessings from another mama grizzly!

This is what it all comes down to... Civil liberties!! When the gov t starts telling us what the fuck to wear then we are all done for!! Next it'll be what we can or cant eat, how much sex is allowed a day, what we watch on tv (already being done in some places!).. etc
I just think it's apity when politics begins to influence social issues which have no place in the rule of law!

Oh man, don't even get me started on advertising. Have you watched the commercials on nickelodian at 4o'clock lately? What about HBO "family"? I'm sure you know how frustrating this is! Grrrr..

I absolutely loathe that fashion...but I think it's silly that so much time is being invested into it.

If they do go through with this. I hope that they do something worthy with the money (cause you just KNOW they're gonna be cleaning house with this one). They should give all teachers in public schools a bonus.

Let's see.....If we're all wearing low slung pants, then we'll be more exposed to the bad sun rays getting through the missing ozone....wait, instead we can all cover ourselves up with "nice" clothes and then we don't have to worry about the ozone layer, or our morals. Kill two birds with one stone, right?

Re: Advertising - we don't watch "TV" in or house. We have one, but get no reception. It's dedicated to movies, videos, and the PS2. My son does see some TV at his dad's, but not too much there either because he's too cheap to pay for cable. Whew! We're also working hard to teach him to be an intelligent consumer and critical thinker when it comes to advertising. So far, so good!

I wouldn't say that I "loathe" the fashion as a whole. Conventionally speaking, I wouldn't wear them. ONLY, because I've had 3 kids and the neighbors appreciate the courtesy.

I agree about the money, however I'm growing more skeptical of our gov't's ability to spend my money wisely.

I agree with Scuba. This wouldn't be an issue if parent's were being parent's and not trying to be "cool", you know.
I'm a tough parent. My 5 yr. old can't do ANYTHING compared to other kids his age. And, I'm only going to get stricter as he gets older. Then when my daughter gets old enough I will probably be harder on her then I am on him. It's our job. I don't need someone looking over my shoulder telling me how to raise my child. I want them to grow respecting people and themselves. I don't want them growing up to be spoiled brats who run MY household.
Okay. I'm done. I can go on forever.

Another thing is video games. We don't even own one since they stopped making games for the regular old nintendo. I saw a commercial last night on espn (while watching poker championships. :D) about one called "Hitman". Its literally a guy that goes out killing people. It's a VIDEO GAME.

What in the world is going on with these game people?

Yea, my nephews have gameboys and nintendos but they are little so the games are age appropriate. It's the exposure when they are at a friends house that I worry about! Hopefully, I'll teach them enough at home that the outside won't be that much of an influence. (Dream on Jenn...)

Well, as a female, I do wear low rise pants, but that's entirely different. I think that that pants-hangin-off-the-butt fashion is just plain sloppy looking. I saw a guy lose his pants that way and trip. He looked like he was about 2 inches from cracking his teeth on the cement...that's just dumb.

I'm from all over the place. But I grew up in Houston. And I'm in Boulder, Colorado right now.

The guy I saw bite the big one when he tripped on his sagging jeans was some dude in Denver. He was downtown at the 16th Street Mall, too...so he ate it in front of everyone. I am probably mean for saying this, but I was sort of happy that everyone saw him do it. Maybe they'll realise what a fucking stupid fashion that is!
